The completion of construction and the opening of the new roundabout at the Church and Victoria Street intersection is a massive win for Onehunga residents and commuters, MP for Maungakiekie Denise Lee says.
"What is notoriously known as Crash Corner, is one of Auckland’s most dangerous intersections. There were many crashes last year with six alone in one week! Having the roundabout will massively improve the safety for all road users and will no doubt save lives.
“Following 15 months of advocacy and calling on Auckland Transport to immediately improve this corner, I’m pleased we’ve reached the finish line. The community have long been calling for action and with our lobbying, we were able to fast-track construction by over two years.
“To mark the occasion, I’m hosting a celebratory street party that I invite all community members to attend. More details can be found on my Facebook page.
“I would like to thank all those involved in this project, including our local residents who supported the campaign, Project Manager Gareth Jones and Liveable Streets. A special thank you to Auckland Transport who responded to our calls and engaged well with the community.
“While I hope neighbouring residents no longer fear that a fatality could occur outside their home, Onehunga’s transport problems spread further than this one intersection.
“Crash Corner is just one example of the Government’s inaction on the East West Link. Their continued silence is deafening and causing huge number of heavy freight trucks to clog up our residential roads, creating significant congestion and safety issues."
